This travel warning has been in place for over two years now (mabey more) but hundreds of Westerners have visited and climbed Elbrus and surrounding mountains without terrorist or bandit related incident. Moscow, London, Dublin or any other major city is, in my humble opinion, far more dangerous than the Elbrus area, and provided you take care on the mountain, watch out for the mad drivers on the roads and don't drink too much vodka you should come back in one piece. I've been there with three groups in the last 12 months
