Earlier ("ranshe") it was very difficult, almost impossible for westerners to gain permission to climb Elbrus. Most people were then satisfied to make a Mont Blanc ascent their European high point. Geographers almost universally agree that Elbrus is in Europe, lying north and separate of the main Caucasian ridge, the physical division between Europe and Asia in that part of the world. Elbrus is a volcano, distinct and standing separate, though only across a tight valley, from the non-volcanic main ridge. Mont Blanc was never really the high point of Europe, only the highest easily climbable point for westerners in Europe.
